The changes that have already hit your business — and what lands on 1 April

April 2025 — Already in effect
Employer NIC: rate up to 15%, threshold cut to £5,000
Previously 13.8% on earnings above £9,100. Now 15% on earnings above £5,000. Part-time and younger staff now attract contributions they didn't before.
April 2025 — Already in effect
National Living Wage rose 6.7% to £12.21/hr
Up from £11.44/hr. Hospitality employs more minimum-wage workers than almost any other UK sector — this hits harder here than almost anywhere else.
April 2025 — Already in effect
Business rates relief cut from 75% to 40%
The Retail, Hospitality & Leisure discount was more than halved. Many operators saw their rates bills more than double overnight.
February 2026 — Already in effect
Alcohol duty rose 3.66% across all products
RPI-linked uprating now in effect. Estimated industry-wide cost: £1.4 billion. Draught relief partially mitigates for qualifying venues, but the net position is a cost increase already in your numbers.
1 April 2026 — Days away
National Living Wage rises to £12.71/hr — from £12.21
A further 4.1% increase on the main rate. The 18–20 rate rises 8.5% to £10.85/hr. This is what the calculator computes. Combined with the 2025 increase, the two-year cumulative wage pressure is significant.
1 April 2026 — Days away
Business rates: permanent new multiplier system replaces temporary relief
The 40% temporary relief scheme ends. A permanent lower RHL multiplier takes effect. For most mid-size and larger hospitality properties, the new rate is higher than the current effective rate — meaning rates bills increase.
